Graduate Programs in Food and Nutritional Sciences (GPFNS) and
in Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Sciences (GPPNS)

The prosperity experienced by humankind in the 20th century has brought us a culture of plenty. However, the impact of the production and consumption of food must be kept in mind if we wish to live in a society that exists in harmony with nature and at the same time achieves healthy human longevity. Research in our department focuses on food and health at the molecular level, based on the sciences of biology and chemistry. We also serve society by providing experts and researchers with professional skills in health maintenance and the prevention of nutrition-related diseases. Our department consists of the Division of Food Science and Biotechnology and the Division of Nutritional and Life Sciences, which cooperate strongly on research and educational initiatives.

Current economic conditions in Japan have necessitated the introduction of a principle of competition in higher education. To stimulate Japanese graduate schools to achieve world-class standards in research and education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) initiated the 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program in 2002, which was further developed as the Global COE Program in 2007. We were awarded grants under both programs, developing the concept of "Integrated Food-Pharmaceutical Science" to discover and promote scientific knowledge of the relationship between food, medicine, and the maintenance of human health. Our Global COE Program was completed in 2012, resulting in the establishment of our new Graduate School of Integrated Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Sciences, in which we continue to actively carry out advanced research and educational projects in this cutting-edge research area.
